Dentistry is full of new techniques! Do you usually feel the administration of local anesthesia (novocaine)? Has any dental professional mentioned that slight reshaping of your front teeth can dramatically improve your smile? Are you aware of new technology in restorative dentistry that eliminates the blackened silver/mercury fillings that mar some smiles? Have you seen how easy it is to whiten your existing teeth?

Absolutely – if you have put aside tax free money with your employer we will be happy to help you with the paperwork to use it. And if you would like estimates to help you put aside the right amount for next year, we can provide you with accurate amounts and make sure you don’t leave it with the employer too!
Surgery? Avoid it!
Isn’t surgery the last thing you want? For us, it’s the last resort!
Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment is an incremental approach to gum disease that allows your body to do its own healing.
Our Part?
Your Part? When you make a commitment to keep your teeth for a lifetime you are, in effect, making a commitment to keeping your mouth healthy. Your part is to either take great care of your gums or come into the office frequently enough to allow us to take care of them for you – or perhaps a personalized schedule that combines the two.
Technically:
The basic premise of Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy is that lowering the bacterial count (the low-grade periodontal infection) alongside your teeth will create a healthy bone attachment.
Thoroughness is the key to healing – and it takes time and effort and skill. By doing the deep scaling one section at a time we can remove almost all of the offending bacteria. Smoothing the root surfaces in this way (also called root planing) allows the gums to heal into the firm, pink tissue that we associate with great health.
In some situations we advise low-dose antibiotics during treatment.
Incremental Treatment:
If, after healing, one section is still stubbornly unhealthy, we can place an antibiotic directly into the offending area – and monitor it closely.
In rare circumstances surgery is recommended – and only if we feel that prognosis (the outcome) will be a very long-lasting healthy result.
Follow-Up Care:
The best way to prevent recurrence of periodontal disease is great home care and, at least for the first year, three-month intervals between cleanings. Research has shown that it takes bacterial colonies about ninety days to mature enough to damage bone. Three month maintenance visits are the safest way to avoid recurrence until you are completely healthy.
Stabilization:
When bone loss is a result of clenching and/or grinding we will suggest that you wear a night time appliance soften those destructive forces and prevent further damage to the bone.
