Endodontic Therapy Post Operative Instructions

Usually we complete the endodontic procedure in one visit.  After the procedure, as the area heals, it is normal to have a dull throbbing feeling for two to three days.  Occasionally a patient may have sensitivity to biting for up to several weeks.  This is related to the amount of infection that was in the bone around the tooth prior to the root canal treatment.  It takes time to heal.

Very rarely, when an infection is severe, a tooth may be left open to drain the infection.

Antibiotic therapy: may be recommended for the purpose of controlling an infection in the bone.  It is important to take all of the prescribed medication.  Please do not save any of the tablets.

If at any time you feel or see facial swelling, please call the office right away.

Teeth that need root canal treatment are more brittle than normal.  To protect the tooth from fracturing it is important to have it completely restored with a protective crown within a year.
